Baby Boy Overcomes Tragic Apartment Fire to Find Forever Family After 7 Years of Waiting
In a heartbreaking turn of fate, little Deyvion's life was forever changed by a devastating apartment fire. As a baby, he was asleep in his bassinet when a fire tore through the building, leaving him with severe burns covering much of his face. Miraculously, Deyvion survived, but his road to recovery was long and grueling.
Despite the odds, this resilient boy from Missouri battled through the painful recovery process at a special burns unit. His story is nothing short of extraordinary — especially considering he did it all without the comforting presence of a family. It wasn’t until Deyvion turned 5 that he found a sense of stability and love through foster care, when he became part of Beth Plunkett's family.
Beth, a single mother of two, quickly bonded with Deyvion, describing him as a "beautiful little boy" who stole her heart right away. “I thought he was a beautiful little boy, and I fell in love with him very quickly,” Beth shared with WGN9 News.
She went on to explain that while others may say how lucky Deyvion is to have her, she feels just as fortunate to have him in her life. “I’m just as equally lucky to have him,” she said.
After spending a staggering 2,545 days without a permanent home or family, Deyvion’s dream finally came true when he was adopted by Beth. "I want him to be, most importantly, just happy,” Beth expressed. “I want him to always feel loved, to have goals, and to achieve amazing things. I know he will — God definitely has an awesome plan for him."
Now, Deyvion is surrounded by the love and support of his new mom and siblings. And it’s not just his new family who is proud of him — the very firefighters who saved his life all those years ago continue to be a part of his incredible journey.
Deputy Chief Eric Smith and his team from the South Metro Fire Department in Raymore have never forgotten the night they pulled Deyvion from the flames. On the day of Deyvion’s adoption, Smith and his crew went above and beyond to make the day even more special. They gave Deyvion a custom jacket and hat, and they even took the family for a ride in the fire truck to the courthouse for the adoption ceremony.
At the courthouse, Smith gave Deyvion a high five, telling him, “He’s extremely special. We don’t always understand why things happen, but we do now.”
This touching moment marked the beginning of Deyvion’s new life, one filled with love and the security he always deserved.
