Why You Don’t Hear from Kelly McGillis Anymore

After achieving significant success in the 1980s and 1990s with films like Witness, At First Sight, and The Accused, McGillis chose a different path. She relocated to North Carolina, prioritizing a life away from the limelight. In a 2019 interview, she reflected on this shift, stating, "​I love acting, I love what I do, I love doing theater, but I don't know." ​

With the release of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, fans anticipated the return of original cast members. However, McGillis did not reprise her role as Charlie. She revealed that she was not approached for the sequel, mentioning, "​Oh my God no they did not, and nor do I think they would ever." She expressed contentment with her appearance, saying, "​I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about." ​

Beyond acting, McGillis has dedicated herself to teaching and supporting others. She taught speech, voice, and scene study at the Asheville School of Film in North Carolina, aiming to enhance students' acting skills. Additionally, she worked full-time at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in South Jersey, helping women overcome addiction. Drawing from her personal struggles with substance abuse, McGillis found fulfillment in guiding others toward recovery.

In June 2018, McGillis experienced a distressing incident when a stranger entered her North Carolina home. She was attacked by the intruder but managed to escape and contact authorities. The assailant was arrested and charged with multiple offenses. Following this event, McGillis obtained a concealed-carry permit for personal protection. ​
