Before her time at the Academy, Avery was a standout student and athlete at Thrall High School in Texas. She excelled in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, earning recognition for her speed and determination. Avery's commitment to excellence extended beyond athletics; she was involved in cheerleading, powerlifting, and maintained impressive academic performance.
In December 2023, Avery shared her excitement about committing to the USAFA on X (formerly Twitter), expressing gratitude for the support she received along her journey. She aspired to become a pilot, a dream that was supported by Congressman Pete Sessions, who nominated her to the Academy. He described her as "everybody's favorite daughter in Texas," highlighting her potential and character.
Avery's sudden death shocked her family, friends, and the Academy community. An autopsy conducted by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office revealed that she died from sepsis caused by Paeniclostridium sordellii, a rare anaerobic bacterium. This infection complicated an acute viral lower respiratory tract infection. Avery had been experiencing a severe cough in the days leading up to her passing. The combination of these health issues led to her untimely death.
Despite her brief time at the USAFA, Avery made a lasting impact on her peers and mentors. Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, USAFA Superintendent, expressed that "we lost an incredible teammate last night," noting that Avery positively influenced her unit, track team, and class. Her loss was deeply felt across the Academy.
A memorial service was held on September 12, 2024, at Tiger Stadium in Thrall, Texas. The service was attended by approximately 100 of Avery’s USAFA classmates who traveled from Colorado to pay their respects. Avery was remembered for her kindness, positivity, and the joy she brought to those around her.
