Elon Musk's Stomach Sparks Viral Debate: Fake 'Barrel Chest' Photo Causes a Stir
Elon Musk, a figure who constantly finds himself in the spotlight, is once again the center of attention — but this time, it's not for his latest technological breakthrough or controversial statements. Instead, the focus is on a viral image that’s sparked massive speculation about his body.
On November 10, 2024, a photo of Elon Musk showing what appeared to be an enlarged stomach and chest quickly made waves on X (formerly Twitter). The image, which looked like Musk had developed a barrel chest — a condition where the chest appears unusually puffed out — set off a flurry of online chatter.
Was this a sign of an underlying health condition? Had Musk's lifestyle finally caught up with him? The photo, which seemed to show an unusually pronounced chest, led many to believe Musk might have developed barrel chest, a condition linked to lung diseases and other health problems.
Before panic and rumors could spread too far, fact-checkers stepped in. The truth was clear: the image was fake. Despite this, the viral tweet, originally posted by the now-deleted account "evan loves morf," quickly gained traction. With over 17.4 million views and 423,000 likes, the tweet showed an AI-generated image of Musk alongside the manipulated photo.
The post claimed, "He always posts AI pictures of himself because he actually looks like this," igniting wild speculation.
To clarify, barrel chest is a condition where the chest appears rounded or puffed up, often due to lung conditions like emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, it was all much ado about nothing. The viral image was altered to make Musk’s chest and stomach look bigger than they actually were.
The manipulated photo came from a video titled "First Look Inside SpaceX's Starfactory with Elon Musk", which was released on June 22, 2024. Around the 2-minute mark of the video, a normal image of Musk was taken and edited to exaggerate his chest and stomach. The edited version spread like wildfire, causing many to jump to conclusions about his health.

But there was no need for concern. The altered photo was a deliberate attempt to mislead viewers, and fact-checking sites like Snopes confirmed its fake nature.
This wasn’t the first time Musk’s body has been under scrutiny. In 2022, photos of Musk vacationing on a $20,000-per-week yacht went viral, showing him shirtless. These images sparked a wave of body-shaming and trolling, but Musk, ever the good sport, responded with humor: "Haha damn, maybe I should take off my shirt more often… free the nip!! (already back in the factory btw)."
Musk, who is 53 years old, has also been open about his weight loss journey. He revealed that he shed over 20 pounds from what he considered an "unhealthy peak weight." In interviews, Musk has discussed his use of Wegovy, an FDA-approved weight management drug, and his intermittent fasting routine.
Though he admits to having less-than-healthy eating habits, his diet consists of foods like steak, sushi, chocolate, coffee, and caffeine-free Diet Coke, with a famous distaste for vegetables. Musk once tweeted, "I eat a donut every morning. Still alive," as a humorous retort to a doctor claiming that sugar was "poison."
Despite the online speculation about Musk’s health, it’s clear that his body and lifestyle continue to captivate the public. Whether it’s a viral photo or a joke about his diet, Musk's personal life often overshadows his professional achievements. But through it all, he remains unfazed, taking the online chatter in stride.
While the viral image of his alleged "barrel chest" may have been a fake, one thing is undeniable: Elon Musk will always be a subject of fascination, and this latest incident is just another example of how every aspect of his life is under constant public scrutiny.
