A New Jersey family is mourning the devastating loss of their 6-year-old daughter, Lucy Morgan, after a freak accident during a family vacation. The tragic event unfolded while Lucy was watching her family play badminton, leading to a catastrophic injury that would take her life.
A Freak Accident Turns Into a Family's Nightmare
The incident occurred in Limerick, Maine, on June 1, 2024, when a badminton racquet unexpectedly broke during a downward swing. A piece of metal from the racquet’s handle snapped off, striking Lucy in the skull and causing a severe brain injury. Her father, Pastor Jesse Morgan, shared the heartbreaking details of the accident on his blog,
New Creation Living.
Jesse recalls how the day began like any other during their family vacation, but quickly took a devastating turn. Lucy, who was an active and loving child, tragically became unresponsive after being struck. Though she continued breathing on her own, her family knew the injury was severe.
Lucy’s Journey to the Hospital: A Fight for Life
After the incident, Lucy was rushed to a small hospital and then airlifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland for immediate treatment. Surgeons worked tirelessly to relieve the pressure on her brain by removing part of her skull, but doctors soon informed the family that the chances of recovery were slim.
In an emotional post, Jesse wrote, "She coded on the operating table, but they managed to bring her back. However, we were told there was very little hope." Lucy was placed in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), where medical staff confirmed the devastating prognosis.
A Heartfelt Prayer: Lucy's Desire to Be with God
In the midst of the tragedy, Jesse shared a touching moment from just weeks before the accident. Lucy had expressed a deep desire to be "saved" and live with God. Just a month earlier, Lucy asked her mother about salvation, and after a brief conversation, she went to her room to pray, asking for forgiveness and expressing her belief in Jesus' death and resurrection.
Jesse described this moment as a "gift" that brought comfort during their unimaginable grief. "What a gift," he wrote, finding solace in the fact that his daughter had found peace before her passing.
A Family's Final Goodbye
Tragically, despite the efforts of medical professionals, Lucy’s condition continued to worsen. On June 5, Jesse shared the heart-wrenching news on his blog that Lucy had passed away early in the morning, peacefully meeting Jesus. "No blog post today. Lucy Lynn Morgan passed away this morning around 4 AM. She now sees Jesus face to face."
Jesse expressed his deep sadness but also noted the lack of pain Lucy felt in her final days, finding some comfort in that.
The Outpouring of Support and Love
In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, the Morgan family has been surrounded by an outpouring of love and support from their community and beyond. Many people have shared kind messages on social media, expressing condolences and honoring Lucy’s memory.
One of Jesse’s former professors, Dan Cruver, spoke highly of his character and faith, offering words of encouragement to the grieving family. "Jesse Morgan was one of those students you remember for his thoughtfulness and engagement," Cruver wrote in a heartfelt post.
Support for the Family
In response to the family's needs during this difficult time, a GoFundMe campaign was created, surpassing its initial goal of $100,000. As of today, the campaign has raised over $125,000 to assist the Morgan family with medical expenses, lodging, meals, and any other needs as they navigate this painful journey.
The organizer of the fundraiser, Jill Anthony, updated the campaign with a message of gratitude and a request for continued prayers. "Please keep praying for the Morgans as they walk through these next days, weeks, months, and years without their sweet Lucy."
