Details surrounding the altercation between Austin and 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony, another athlete attending the track event, have emerged. Reports indicate that the two did not know each other prior to April 2. The confrontation began when Austin reportedly told Anthony to move from a seat at Frisco Memorial High School's tent. A heated exchange ensued, with Austin telling Anthony, "You need to move," to which Anthony allegedly responded, "Make me move."
The situation escalated when Anthony, a student from another school, allegedly grabbed a knife from his backpack and stabbed Austin in the chest. Hunter, Austin's twin brother, desperately tried to stop the bleeding while waiting for first responders to arrive.
Hunter Metcalf, who witnessed the entire ordeal, described the heartbreaking scene as he tried to help his brother. "I could see all the blood, and I saw where the wound was. I was very concerned, so I rushed to get my parents," Hunter told WFAA. The family rushed to the hospital, but despite their efforts and prayers, Austin succumbed to his injuries.
Austin’s father, Jeff Metcalf, has expressed his pain and disbelief at the loss of his son, remembering him as a leader with a radiant smile. "He was a leader of men. His passion for football was unbelievable. His smile would light up the room," Jeff wrote on a GoFundMe page set up to support the family in their time of grief.
"This is murder," Jeff said in an interview with NBC Dallas-Fort Worth. "It’s God’s plan, I don’t understand it, but they weren’t able to save him."
In the wake of the attack, Karmelo Anthony has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He is being held in Collin County Jail with a $1 million bond.
Anthony’s father, however, has expressed a different perspective on the incident, claiming his son was not the aggressor. “Everyone has already made their assumptions about my son, but he’s not what they’re making him out to be,” Andrew Anthony told the New York Post. “He was not the aggressor. He was not the one who started it.”
As this heartbreaking tragedy unfolds, the community of Frisco, Texas, and beyond, mourns the loss of a bright young man with a promising future ahead of him. Austin’s friends, family, and teammates are left to grapple with the grief of losing someone they admired, loved, and looked up to.
In a time of heartbreak, the outpouring of love for Austin Metcalf stands as a testament to his character and the impact he had on those around him.
Our deepest condolences go out to Austin’s family, and may his memory live on forever in the hearts of all who knew him.
Rest in peace, Austin. You will never be forgotten.
