When Cole was four years old, he and his mother moved to a 1,500-acre ranch outside Eugene, Oregon. Armed with a BB gun, an adventurous spirit, and a connection to the land, he later described this period as the happiest time of his life. But as his mother, a self-proclaimed "vagabond" and free spirit, moved them around frequently, young Cole’s life was always in flux.
A Father’s Absence and Hollywood’s Reluctance
Cole’s upbringing wasn’t without its challenges. His father was absent, and Cole had little understanding of the man who had helped bring him into the world. It wasn’t until he was around nine or ten that he saw his father—actor Wings Hauser—on television.
“I watched a movie and saw his name in the credits,” Cole recalled. “I went to my mom and said, ‘I just saw a guy on TV, his name’s Wings Hauser.’ And she just said, ‘Wow.’”
At fifteen, Cole finally met his father. However, their reunion was far from the idealized connection he had hoped for. Wings Hauser, battling addiction, wasn’t able to offer the stability Cole needed. In a twist of fate, Cole found himself living alone on a docked boat in Marina del Rey, California.
Living on a Boat and Chasing a Dream
For most teenagers, living alone on a boat would have been a nightmare. But for Cole, it symbolized freedom and independence. "It was an awesome time because it meant freedom," he later said. With only a few dollars to his name, he found a way to make ends meet by working odd jobs and attending auditions.
His big break came in 1992 when he landed a role in School Ties, starring alongside Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Though he was still learning the ropes, Cole was taken under the wing of legendary cinematographer Freddie Francis, who helped him hone his craft.
The Long Road to Yellowstone
Over the years, Cole Hauser's career continued to rise. He appeared in films like Dazed and Confused, Good Will Hunting, and 2 Fast 2 Furious, often portraying intense, tough characters. But it wasn’t until the role of Rip Wheeler on Yellowstone that Cole’s life would come full circle.
To portray Rip, Cole drew from his own experiences of working on ranches and living in remote areas. He threw himself into training, learning to rope and ride like a seasoned cowboy. His dedication paid off, earning him both critical acclaim and a devoted fanbase.
A Proud Father and a Legacy in Montana
Despite his tough exterior, Cole Hauser’s story is deeply rooted in family. His father, though a figure fraught with complications, has always been proud of his son’s success, especially in Yellowstone.
“Absolutely,” Cole said when asked if his dad was proud. “He’s a huge fan of the show and is obviously very proud of what I’ve done in it.”

But as Cole discovered years later, his ties to the West run even deeper. While filming Yellowstone, he and his eldest son traveled to Montana to explore their ancestral roots. They uncovered a surprising family history: Cole’s great-great-grandfather, Samuel T. Hauser, had not only helped fund the Lewis and Clark Expedition but also served as Montana’s first governor.
“It makes so much sense now,” Cole said. “I’ve always had this love for the state, but didn’t really know why. My family’s been there since the beginning.”

It’s a chance to honor his family’s history, to create a legacy for his own children, and to reflect on the persistence that defined his own journey.
