Heroic Deputy Saves Wife’s Life in Devastating Crash: A Story of Love and Courage

Life can change in an instant, often when we least expect it. For one courageous husband, a split-second decision made all the difference between life and death.

On August 1, a young couple was faced with an unimaginable situation when a car came barreling toward them on the side of the road. What happened next is a remarkable story of bravery and selflessness that will inspire anyone who reads it.

Off-Duty Deputy Puts Himself in Harm’s Way to Save Wife

31-year-old Raymond Surber, an off-duty driver, was cruising in his 2017 Chevrolet Silverado when disaster struck. It was around 11:17 p.m. when Surber's vehicle crashed into Lucas and Nicole Shoffner, who were tending to a dirt bike by the roadside.

What could have been a tragic incident for both, turned into an incredible act of heroism when Lucas, an ACSO Reserve Deputy, pushed his wife out of harm’s way.

However, Lucas' quick thinking came at a great personal cost. While his wife Nicole narrowly escaped serious injury, Lucas sustained critical injuries.

The Brave Actions That Saved a Life

According to Matt Fagiana, a close associate of the Shoffners, Lucas' heroic actions saved Nicole's life. Lucas, sacrificing his own safety, pushed his wife out of the path of the oncoming vehicle, ultimately bearing the brunt of the impact.

Fagiana expressed his admiration and support, stating, “Lucas is as strong as an ox, kind-hearted, and deserves a second chance at life. We are all praying for his recovery, and we’re standing by both Lucas and Nicole every step of the way.”

The Recovery Journey: A Long Road Ahead

Nicole was rushed to Fort Sanders for a CT scan and x-rays after sustaining only minor injuries. Lucas, however, was not as fortunate. With life-threatening injuries to his head, Lucas was immediately transported to UT Medical Center and placed in a medically induced coma in the Transplant Intensive Care Unit.

Despite the grim circumstances, Lucas’ recovery is a story of resilience and hope. After 23 long days in a coma, Lucas woke up, and doctors confirmed that he was on the road to recovery. His condition steadily improved, and he began to regain strength.

Lucas is now at a rehabilitation facility in Atlanta, where he recently walked 200 steps—a monumental achievement celebrated by his wife Nicole and everyone who has supported them during this journey.

Community Comes Together to Support the Shoffners

In response to the couple’s medical crisis, their community came together in a big way. A GoFundMe campaign was launched to assist with the growing medical bills, with a goal of $100,000. As of now, the campaign has raised over $93,000, a testament to the outpouring of support for the Shoffners.

Nicole took to social media to express her gratitude to everyone who has helped in any way, whether through donations or prayers.

A Love That Knows No Bounds

Lucas’ heroic actions are a true testament to the power of love. The selflessness he displayed, putting his wife’s life before his own, is a reminder of the lengths people will go for those they love.

The Shoffners' story is one of strength, sacrifice, and unwavering love. Despite the difficult road ahead, their bond remains stronger than ever.
