Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work on a cruise where everyone is completely nude? Well, it's not a dream or a scandalous fantasy—it's a reality! Meet Kat Whitmire, the Vice President of Sales at Bare Necessities Tour and Travel, who reveals the insider secrets behind this unique and eye-opening vacation experience.
Recently, a Reddit thread went viral, sparking widespread curiosity about one of the most intriguing travel experiences available today: a 2,000-person nude cruise. It's not just about shedding clothes—it’s about creating an environment where freedom, relaxation, and body positivity take center stage.
Imagine setting sail on a massive cruise ship, surrounded by 2,000 other passengers—all of whom are nude. Sounds wild, right? But the reality is much more laid-back and welcoming than it sounds. According to a recent Reddit post from a cruise-goer, the ship attracts a diverse mix of repeat travelers, nudist club members, and even curious couples seeking a no-judgment zone to unwind and connect.
"A significant number of the people on this cruise are repeats meeting up with friends year after year," one Reddit user shared. "It’s a very eclectic group of people—from old hippies to traditional nudists, and even some couples looking for a little more adventure."
This cruise, operated by Bare Necessities, is famous for its community feel and body-positive atmosphere. But what goes on behind the scenes? We sat down with Kat Whitmire, who has been helping organize these cruises for over a decade, to find out.
Kat Whitmire is no stranger to the world of cruising. In fact, she’s spent years volunteering on different ships before joining Bare Necessities in 2010. As the Vice President of Sales, she plays a vital role in organizing and promoting the company’s two annual cruises—The Big Nude Boat (with over 2,000 passengers) and a smaller summer cruise.

"We spend all year planning for these cruises," Kat explained in an interview with Business Insider. "From setting the schedule for staff to planning excursions at every port of call, there’s a lot that goes into making sure these cruises run smoothly."
While the nude aspect might be the headline draw, Kat explains that most guests don’t spend the entire trip in the buff. "In fact, you’d be surprised—about 85% of our passengers wear clothes most of the time. Restaurants, for example, have a dress code. But on deck, in the hot tubs, or during certain excursions? That’s where the nudity comes in."
For Kat, the focus isn’t on nudity for the sake of shock value—it’s about creating a relaxed and supportive community. "Being nude isn’t sexual here. It’s about freedom and equality. When you’re not wearing clothes, you can’t judge anyone by their appearance. You have to get to know them as a person."
One of the most surprising elements of the nude cruise experience, according to Kat, is the strong sense of camaraderie and friendship that develops among passengers. "Nudism is about leaving judgment behind. Our guests form deep friendships that I don’t think happen as easily on traditional cruises."

And, Kat insists, this is not a "swinger" or "lifestyle" cruise. "It’s important to understand the distinction. While there are plenty of other cruises out there for those seeking something more risqué, our trips focus on body positivity, relaxation, and personal connections."
Despite its reputation, many passengers report that the cruise is far more relaxed than it might initially seem. "For a nude cruise, you’d be surprised to find that most people wore clothes during many of the activities. All the restaurants had a dress code, and even the buffet had guests wearing something from the waist down," one Reddit user shared.
However, when it’s time to let loose, nudity takes center stage. Passengers can be seen soaking up the sun on the deck, dancing the night away at themed parties, and even attending nudist performances. "We had a couple from France who performed a nudist musical at our dance parties. It was an amazing, freeing experience!" a passenger shared.
So, what’s the verdict on the nude cruise? Is it just a wild, overhyped vacation trend, or does it offer something deeper? For many, it’s all about the freedom to be yourself—without judgment or expectations. And for those who’ve experienced it, the journey isn’t about the nudity; it’s about connecting with others, shedding the usual social norms, and embracing an empowering experience at sea.
