Tragic Loss of Young Athlete Sparks Vital Awareness on Food Allergies: Oakley Debbs’ Legacy

On a peaceful Thanksgiving in Maine, tragedy struck an unsuspecting family. Eleven-year-old Oakley Debbs, a bright student and star athlete from West Palm Beach, Florida, was living the dream—until a simple piece of cake would turn his life upside down.

Despite battling asthma and life-threatening food allergies, Oakley had always shown immense strength and resilience. A lover of tennis, soccer, and marathon running, Oakley’s passion for sports never faltered, even though he had to carefully monitor what he ate due to his allergies.

But on November 24, during a Thanksgiving family vacation, Oakley made a choice that would unknowingly lead to a heartbreaking fate.

The Cake That Changed Everything

Oakley had been enjoying a holiday treat basket, which included a seemingly innocent piece of pound cake. As always, Oakley was careful about his food due to his nut allergy, double-checking labels to ensure his safety. But that day, he didn’t notice anything unusual.

“I thought it was just a piece of cake,” Oakley’s father, Robert Debbs, recalls. But soon after Oakley ate the cake, he suspected something was wrong. “He came over and said, ‘It might have contained nuts.’” Merrill Debbs, Oakley’s mother, also noticed a nutty flavor in the cake, which was later identified as walnut.

As part of their usual routine, the family administered Benadryl, thinking it would alleviate any mild reaction. But Oakley’s condition quickly escalated. What started as a small hive on his lip soon turned into chest pains and vomiting. The situation became dire, and the family rushed to call 911.

A Devastating Loss

When the paramedics arrived, it was too late. Oakley’s airways had closed, and his heart had stopped beating. Despite the swift arrival of medical help, the young athlete tragically passed away in his father's arms.

His parents, Robert and Merrill Debbs, were left shattered. Merrill, heartbroken and in disbelief, expressed the immense pain of losing her son: “I don’t think my beautiful, amazing, talented, adorable son should have passed away.”

Creating a Lasting Legacy: The Red Sneaker Foundation

In the wake of their devastating loss, Oakley’s family turned their grief into action. They founded the Red Sneaker Foundation to raise awareness about anaphylaxis—the severe, life-threatening allergic reaction that claimed Oakley’s life. The red sneakers Oakley loved so much became a symbol for their mission: to educate the public on recognizing the signs of food allergies and to promote the immediate use of epinephrine during an allergic emergency.

The foundation’s goal is clear: prevent future tragedies by teaching people how to respond effectively to food allergies, and by advocating for increased safety measures in homes and schools.

Oakley’s Legacy: A Call to Action

Oakley’s story is not just a tale of loss but one of hope and education. Experts emphasize that even the mildest allergic reaction should be treated immediately with epinephrine, as Oakley’s case tragically proves how rapidly symptoms can escalate.

Merrill Debbs, Oakley’s mother, shared her deep emotional drive behind the foundation’s work: “My son was a rock star—a good, good kid. And I always knew he would make a difference, but I never imagined it would be after he passed away.”

Raising Awareness and Saving Lives

By sharing Oakley’s story, we can help raise awareness about the hidden dangers of food allergies and how crucial it is to act quickly in an emergency. Oakley’s legacy lives on through the Red Sneaker Foundation, and through continued education, we can all work together to prevent such heart-wrenching tragedies in the future.

If you or a loved one is at risk of anaphylaxis, educate yourself about the symptoms and always have epinephrine on hand. Together, we can make a difference.
