When Andrea West met her future husband during their final year at university, little did they know that their whirlwind romance would soon lead to a life-altering experience. Moving back to Andrea's hometown after graduation, the couple eagerly began their journey together, eventually getting engaged and sharing the exciting news that Andrea was pregnant with their first child. Andrea’s joy knew no bounds.
But just 11 weeks into her pregnancy, that joy turned into profound grief when Andrea experienced a miscarriage.
A Journey of Loss, Hope, and Healing
On her Facebook page Love What Matters, Andrea shared the emotional toll of her miscarriage:
“I was an absolute wreck. I didn’t know what to do, who to talk to, or who could help me. I didn’t realize that 1 in 4 women experience the same loss and how little people talk about it. I didn’t know if I could ever feel ready to try again.”
Despite the heartbreak, Andrea found comfort and strength in the unwavering support of her husband. Over time, her anxiety began to fade, and she eventually fell pregnant again. Determined to give her baby the best chance, Andrea made lifestyle changes, avoiding certain foods, diving into pregnancy books, and ensuring her health was in top shape.
This time, everything went smoothly, and Andrea’s pregnancy progressed without complications. She even began having small contractions on schedule and prepared to head to the hospital for delivery.
The Unexpected Turn During Labor
But what was supposed to be a routine delivery turned into a medical emergency. An ultrasound showed that Andrea had little to no amniotic fluid left, and doctors had to induce labor immediately.
When Andrea and her husband finally welcomed their son into the world, they couldn’t have anticipated what was about to unfold.
Andrea’s partner was unable to cut the umbilical cord as they had planned. Instead, their newborn son, Adam, was quickly whisked away by medical staff, leaving Andrea confused and concerned. Through the crowd of doctors, Andrea’s husband caught a glimpse of Adam and turned to her with a grave look in his eyes: “Honey, there’s something wrong with Adam’s leg.”
The Diagnosis: Cutis Marmorata Telangiectatica Congenita (CMTC)
As more doctors gathered around Adam, Andrea's anxiety grew. Her son’s right leg and side of his stomach had turned a troubling shade of purple and black. No one told Andrea what was happening or what was wrong with her baby.
Eventually, the diagnosis came: Adam had Cutis Marmorata Telangiectatica Congenita (CMTC), a rare vascular condition that affects the skin. At the time, only 500 cases of this rare disorder had been reported globally.
Adam underwent a series of tests on his vital organs, but thankfully, he passed them all without any issues. Andrea spent days in the NICU, her exhaustion growing with each passing moment. Yet, despite the overwhelming uncertainty, Adam’s strength began to shine through.
A Fighter: Overcoming the Odds
Today, Adam is a vibrant, healthy young boy who loves math and playing chess. While his condition causes his leg to be weaker than others, Adam doesn’t let it stop him. He’s even able to participate in sports and is as active as any other child.
Through it all, Andrea remains deeply involved in raising awareness for CMTC and other rare vascular malformations. She actively supports the CMTC Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering individuals affected by this condition.
A Family United in Strength and Hope
The West family’s journey, though marked by hardship, has been one of incredible resilience. From the pain of loss to the joy of Adam’s growth and development, Andrea and her husband have remained steadfast. Today, they continue to raise awareness for rare diseases like CMTC, ensuring that families facing similar struggles are not alone.
