In today’s world, society often imposes silent pressure on individuals to follow a specific life path—get a job, find a partner, get married, and have children. For couples who choose not to have children, the scrutiny can be intense. They are often forced to explain and justify their decision, with personal questions that can feel intrusive and uncomfortable.
However, what happens when a couple—considered "different" by societal standards—decides to embark on the journey of parenthood? For many, including those with disabilities like Down syndrome, the decision to have children can spark even more criticism and judgment.
A Bold Decision: Patti White’s Support for Her Daughter’s Pregnancy
More than 20 years ago, Patti White from California received news that would change her life forever. Her daughter, Lisa, who has Down syndrome, was pregnant.
Down syndrome is a congenital disorder caused by a chromosomal abnormality, resulting in varying degrees of physical and intellectual challenges. But many forget that individuals with Down syndrome can live fulfilling, independent lives, hold jobs, and nurture relationships.
Lisa, at 29, was already living independently, working full-time at Goodwill, and maintaining a healthy relationship with her boyfriend—also with Down syndrome. Her life was an example of independence, showing that her condition didn’t define her ability to live a fulfilling life.
Despite the rare occurrence of two individuals with Down syndrome becoming parents, Lisa’s decision to keep the baby was met with both excitement and concern. Patti, initially shocked, stood by her daughter’s side, offering her unwavering support.
"She got along with everyone. She could do everything except work the cash register. She liked it there, and they liked her,” Patti told Voice in 2016.
Facing Criticism: Society’s Harsh Judgment of Parenting Choices
Unfortunately, not everyone shared Patti’s support. Lisa’s decision to have a child was quickly labeled as irresponsible, selfish, and inappropriate by many outsiders who questioned her ability to be a good mother.
Despite the criticism, Lisa’s family remained a pillar of support. Lisa continued her pregnancy like many others, attending childbirth classes, receiving support from a pregnancy coach, and experiencing the same morning sickness and discomfort that any mother would.
"My pregnancy was hard. I worked five days a week. I had morning sickness, and I didn’t feel good. I felt like I was going to throw up," Lisa recalled to Voice.
The Birth of Nic: A New Chapter and a Lifetime of Love
Lisa’s pregnancy was considered high-risk, and Nic, her son, was born four weeks early with Down syndrome—just like his parents. Though Lisa and Nic’s father initially tried to live together after Nic’s birth, tragedy struck when Nic’s father passed away when he was only five.
Yet, Lisa was determined to raise her son, with the help of her mother, Patti. Nic, now 24 years old, has thrived despite the odds. He’s a college graduate, a young man of great strength, and he holds immense respect and love for the two women who raised him.
“I have two moms. My mom Lisa is my greatest future in my life. She gave me life, love, and she’s always been wonderful and beautiful,” Nic said in an interview with Fabiosa.
Overcoming the Odds: A Family Defying Expectations
In 2016, Patti shared a heartfelt update on Facebook, showcasing her pride in her daughter and grandson:
"This is my daughter, Lisa, clowning with her son, Nic. They both have Down syndrome. This year is a landmark for all of us. She will turn 50, and he will turn 20. I’m older than dirt, but I’m so proud of us. Our goal when she became pregnant was for her to know him and have a relationship with him. There were many ups to their 'Downs.' After all these years, we can honestly say they have overcome the odds and share tremendous love for each other and their small little family unit," Patti wrote on Facebook.
A Legacy of Love and Inspiration
Patti, Lisa, and Nic’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the strength, love, and resilience within families, regardless of their circumstances. It also helps challenge the stereotypes surrounding Down syndrome, showing that individuals with the condition can lead meaningful, fulfilling lives.
Their journey has inspired many to reconsider what it means to be a family and the value of love and support in overcoming life’s challenges. The White family’s message continues to resonate, offering hope and strength to others in similar situations.
If you believe in the power of family, love, and breaking societal norms, please share this incredible story. Let’s continue to raise awareness about the potential of individuals with Down syndrome and the beauty of unconditional love.
