Donald Trump has never been one to mince words.
Donald Trump Faces Backlash Over His Tone About Pope Francis’ Funeral
As the world prepares to bid farewell to Pope Francis this Saturday, former U.S. President Donald Trump once again stirred controversy with his words. While many world leaders have expressed grief over the Pope's passing, it was Trump’s choice of words that caused an uproar.
On April 21, following Pope Francis’ death, Trump shared his condolences on Truth Social, writing: “Rest in peace Pope Francis! May God bless him and all who loved him!” He also announced that U.S. flags should be flown at half-staff in honor of the Pope’s memory.
However, it wasn’t just his statement of respect that grabbed attention. Trump followed up with a controversial comment, saying: “Melania and I will be going to the funeral of Pope Francis, in Rome. We look forward to being there!”
The phrase “look forward to being there” raised eyebrows across social media, with many criticizing the former president for being tone-deaf and seemingly treating a funeral like a social event. Some users on X (formerly Twitter) mocked him, with one commenter saying, “He thinks he’s going to Coachella” while another questioned, “Who looks forward to a funeral?”
Trump’s Rocky Relationship with Pope Francis
Donald Trump’s relationship with Pope Francis was marked by tension from the beginning. In 2013, before Trump became president, he praised the newly elected Pope, calling him “a humble man, very much like me.” But their friendly dynamic quickly soured.
The two clashed on numerous issues, particularly immigration. In 2016, Pope Francis famously criticized Trump’s proposed border wall, saying: “A person who thinks only about building walls… is not Christian.” Trump retaliated, calling the Pope’s comments “disgraceful.”
Their differences persisted even after Trump became president. Pope Francis condemned Trump’s stance on immigration and mass deportations, while Trump continued to push for stricter border policies.
Trump’s Visit to the Vatican
Despite their differences, Trump and his wife Melania will attend the Pope’s funeral — marking Trump’s first international trip of his second term. However, it was his choice of words in announcing the funeral attendance that caught the public’s attention. Many on social media were quick to express their shock, calling the phrasing inappropriate for such a somber occasion.
In contrast to Trump’s brief and somewhat upbeat statement, others, like Vice President JD Vance, paid tribute with heartfelt messages, reflecting on Pope Francis’ impact on the world and remembering his powerful homilies during the early days of COVID-19.
Pope Francis' Funeral Details
The funeral will take place on Saturday, April 26, at 10 AM local time in St. Peter’s Square. After the public ceremony, Pope Francis’ body will be transported to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, as per his own wishes.
