As a little girl, Liv Tyler had a nightly ritual: tucking in her teddy bears and talking to a poster of Steven Tyler, the electrifying lead singer of Aerosmith. What she didn’t know then was that the rock legend she admired so deeply was actually her biological father.
In a heartfelt reveal, Liv Tyler, now 47, shared her extraordinary story during an episode of "Sibling Revelry," a podcast hosted by Kate and Oliver Hudson. What began as innocent admiration turned into a powerful story of identity, family, and finding the truth.
Long before her breakout roles in Empire Records (1995), Stealing Beauty (1996), and Armageddon (1998), Liv was piecing together the mystery of her lineage.
She grew up believing Todd Rundgren—singer, producer, and member of the band Utopia—was her father. Her mother, Bebe Buell, a former Playboy Playmate and model, had made that decision to shield Liv from the chaos of Steven Tyler’s drug-fueled lifestyle at the time.
“I’m so grateful to Todd for choosing to be a father figure to me,” Liv said. “It’s a big thing for a man to say, ‘I know this kid might not be mine, but I still want to be her father.’”
Rundgren signed her birth certificate and raised her with love, despite not being her biological dad.
The truth began to unravel when Liv was around eight or nine years old. While attending one of Rundgren’s concerts, she met Steven Tyler for the first time. He bought her a Shirley Temple at the bar—neither of them realizing their deep biological connection.
“Strangely enough, when I first met my dad, I didn’t know he was my dad—and I fell in love with him,” Liv revealed. “I would talk to his poster on the wall. I loved him so deeply.”
The pivotal moment came at an Aerosmith concert when Liv spotted a girl on the side of the stage who looked exactly like her. That girl was Mia Tyler—Steven’s daughter with Cyrinda Foxe, born just a year after Liv.
“I looked and was like, ‘wait, that’s me.’”
Wearing matching outfits and sporting the same perm, lipstick, and Reebok sneakers, the resemblance was uncanny. Liv turned to her mother, who burst into tears.
“We sat on a bench outside the amphitheater and she told me the whole story in the most sincere, beautiful way,” Liv said, her voice emotional on the podcast.
The revelation changed everything—but not in a bitter way. Liv maintains a close relationship with both of her “dads.”
“They are like unicorns or wizards. Their eccentricities have made me more practical and more normal, in a way,” she said.
Now a mother of three, Liv has embraced the unconventional path her life has taken. Her story is a testament to love, understanding, and the nontraditional bonds that define what it means to be family.
