Ben Affleck has finally addressed his divorce from Jennifer Lopez, which came just two years after the couple’s surprise Las Vegas wedding in 2022.
Affleck and Lopez, often referred to as ‘Bennifer’ by the media in the early 2000s, had a whirlwind romance that led to an engagement, only to end in an unexpected breakup. Nearly two decades later, they rekindled their romance, marrying in a low-key ceremony that thrilled fans who were hopeful for a fairytale conclusion to their long, tumultuous love story.
However, by early 2024, rumors of trouble in paradise began circulating, and it wasn’t long before speculation mounted that their marriage was in jeopardy. In August 2024, Lopez filed for divorce in Los Angeles County Superior Court, citing "irreconcilable differences." By this time, the couple had been living separately for some time, and while their hectic schedules might have contributed to their limited public appearances together, the signs of an impending split were clear.
Neither Affleck nor Lopez had spoken much about the details of their separation, but recently, Affleck sat down for an interview with GQ to offer some perspective.
When asked about his last conversation with Lopez, the 52-year-old actor shared, “On one hand, I hope I was clear when you asked me about Jen and the documentary, and I talked a little about my personal life. I don’t mind doing that as long as my actual feelings and intentions are communicated, which I hope I did. I have a lot of respect for her.”
He continued, “People often want to find a single cause for a breakup, but the truth is much more mundane than people might expect or find interesting.”
Later in the interview, Affleck admitted that the entire situation had been “embarrassing.”
“There’s no scandal or intrigue. The truth is, when you ask what happened, there isn’t a dramatic ‘this is what happened.’ It’s really just a story of people trying to navigate their relationships, which we all do in our own ways,” he said.
He added, “As you get older, you realize there isn’t a single event that causes everything to fall apart. It’s more like a couple’s therapy session—and after a while, you start tuning out.”
Affleck reflected on the personal nature of the experience, saying, “The reason I don’t want to share the details is that it’s just embarrassing. It feels vulnerable.”
Meanwhile, Lopez also spoke about the collapse of her marriage in an interview, describing it as an “exploding and burning house.”
“When your whole house blows up, you’re left standing in the rubble thinking, ‘How do I make sure this never happens again?’” Lopez said. “Then you begin to break it down, piece by piece, acknowledging your part in it, recognizing the signs you missed, and the things you didn’t see early on. Those are the real lessons.”
Despite the pain and public scrutiny, both Affleck and Lopez seem to have learned valuable lessons from their experiences, though the specifics remain private.
